Influenza Vaccine Composition for 2020-2021
2020-21 trivalent vaccines:
- A/Guangdong-Maonan/SWL1536/2019 (H1N1)pdm09-like virus (updated)
- A/Hong Kong/2671/2019 (H3N2)-like virus (updated)
- B/Washington/02/2019 (B/Victoria lineage)-like virus (updated)
2020-21 quadrivalent vaccines:
- the same three HA antigens as trivalent vaccines, plus
- B/Phuket/3073/2013-like virus (B/Yamagata/16/88 lineage)
2020-21 New Licensed Vaccines
- The first is a quadrivalent high-dose vaccine licensed for use in adults 65 years and older. This vaccine will replace the previously licensed trivalent high-dose vaccine.
- The second new vaccine that will be available is a quadrivalent adjuvanted vaccine licensed for use in adults 65 years and older.
- This vaccine is similar to the previously licensed trivalent vaccine containing MF59 adjuvant, but it has one additional influenza B component.

Influenza Vaccine Storage and Administration
IIV (Inactivated Influenza Vaccine) should be refrigerated at 2 degrees to 8 degrees C (36 degrees to 46 degrees F). Flu vaccine cannot be frozen. IIV should be administered in the deltoid muscle of older children and adults. The preferred injection site for infants and young children is the antero lateral aspect of the thigh. One inch needle lengths should be used for all groups, although large people may require immunization with a 1 ½ needle length.
Fluzone intradermal is administered intradermally via a single-dose, prefilled microinjection syringe. The preferred site for administration is over the deltoid muscle. Fluzone intradermal is indicated for persons aged 18 through 64 years.
LAIV (live attenuated influenza vaccine) is an option for influenza vaccination for 2020-2021 flu season. ACIP, inactivated influenza vaccine (IIV) storage and administration has not changed.
