Immunization Projects

Immunization Projects

The Immunization Program has many ongoing and seasonal projects to help provide prevent diseases and provide access to vaccines to our community. Some of these are listed below.

Back to School Vaccinations

Depending on their age and grade, kids need certain vaccinations for school. The best place for them to get vaccinated is their doctor’s office; if they don’t have a doctor or insurance, there are vaccination clinics in Alameda County.

Tdap Project

tdap The Immunization Section has partnered with the Alameda Alliance for Health to increase Tdap (tetanus, diptheria, pertussis) vaccination for pregnant women in their third trimester. Women getting immunized between 27 to 36 weeks gestation of every pregnancy is the best way to protect vulnerable newborns from dangerous pertussis (whooping cough) disease. Please click the link to learn more about best practices for raising Tdap vaccination rates among pregnant women. Also, visit our resources page for free immunization materials.

Shoo the Flu

City of Oakland preschool and elementary children can receive free flu vaccinations each fall through Shoo the Flu, a community-based initiative to prevent seasonal influenza (flu) in Oakland through a school-based vaccination program.

Flu Vaccine Distribution

At the start of each flu season we distribute flu vaccine to providers in our community who serve uninsured and underinsured populations. Flu-related complications can become serious and lead to hospitalizations and even death, particularly among infants and the elderly. Vaccinating against the flu protects not just the person who has been vaccinated, but the whole community.
