Pregnant Women
- Congenital Infection can occur at any time during pregnancy and in the 8 weeks prior to conception, which can lead to Congenital Zika Syndrome.
- Pregnant women should be encouraged not to travel to areas with risk of Zika Virus transmission.
- Currently, there is no evidence suggesting past Zika virus infection poses increased risk of birth defects for subsequent pregnancies once the virus has completely cleared a woman’s body.
- Although Zika virus has been detected in breast milk, transmission of Zika virus infection through breastfeeding has not been documented. CDC encourages mothers infected with Zika to continue breastfeeding.
